FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How effective is drug treatment? Government reports say that drug treatment is just as effective as treatment for other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.  According to several studies, drug treatment reduces drug use by 40 to 60 percent and significantly decreases criminal activity during and after drug and alcohol treatment. On an individual basis, treatment outcomes depend on the extent and nature of the patient's presenting problems, the appropriateness of the drug treatment components and related services used to address those problems

Do I have a problem?  One of the best ways to pinpoint a problem with drug or alcohol addiction is to ask a simple question:  Do I continue to use drugs even though they cause problems with relationships, my health, or my job?

Other simple ways to tell if you have a problem:

  •  You believe that you need to use alcohol or drugs in order to have fun.

  •  After an argument or personal difficulties, you turn to alcohol to alleviate stress and anxiety.

  •  You often drink or use drugs alone.

  •  You make promises to stop drinking or using drugs, but find yourself unable to stop.

  •  You experience memory loss as a result of using alcohol and drugs.

Why do people use drugs and alcohol? Quite simply, people use drugs and alcohol because it feels good.  When the brain receives stimulus that it likes, it wants more.  Most addictive drugs have this quality.

How do I stop abusing drugs or alcohol?  One of the first ways to stop drug addiction is by admitting to the issue.  Drug addiction shouldn’t be an affliction you should have to suffer alone.  The Discovery Program’s 12 Step Program will put you in a caring rehabilitation and treatment program to help you conquer your drug or alcohol addiction.

The Discovery Program's Family Treatment Program is a vital part of a client's recovery from drug addiction and the family members’ recovery as well.

At the Los Angeles treatment center, we provide weekly family group sessions to family members, significant others, and friends which are facilitated by a licensed therapist. Separate family sessions are also encouraged for the family members and significant others.

The effects of alcoholism and drug addiction can be devastating to the family. Ironically, family members can be the last to openly admit that there is a problem. At Discovery, we provide a safe and supportive rehabilitation center where family members discover that they are not responsible for the behavior of their loved one, and learn to refocus their energies on themselves and their own recovery.

Upon entry to Liberty House, family members of an alcoholic or addict have a strong support group consisting of current family members, older family members and an established Al-Anon meeting.  New family members are given the support (if they want it) needed to cope with the effects of alcoholism and drug addiction.  Our experience has shown us that those family members who attend our family groups regularly and Al-Anon meetings begin to recover as well.  Alcoholism is a family disease.  Everyone suffers, and therefore must be treated.  New family members realize that they are not alone and begin to feel a sense of hope as does the alcoholic/addict.  Thus, the journey of a lifetime begins.

Day Treatment

Day Treatment programs are available for those clients who have completed Discovery’s Inpatient Detoxification or Residential Treatment programs.  Individualized Day Treatment programs are designed to meet the needs of clients who no longer require 24-hour supervision but continue to need a structured recovery program in a safe, comfortable environment.

Participants in this program are provided six to eight hours per day of structured chemical dependency treatment at The Discovery Program’s facility.  Clients initially attend the program at least four and up to seven days a week, with a decrease in the frequency of attendance over the course of treatment, dependent upon progress in the program.

TREATMENT INFORMATION

“Detox” is the detoxifying of toxins remaining in the body resulting from the consumption of alcohol or drugs.  Drug abuse and frequent alcohol consumption can eventually cause addiction.  If a person stops using drugs or drinking alcohol, a withdrawal will occur.  This withdrawal usually manifests itself in the form of “cravings”, frequently a symptom of drug abuse.  Other symptoms (when not medically supervised) can include severe anxiety, hallucinations, seizures, nausea, and high blood pressure.  This is a process that can be alleviated through medical treatment at a rehabilitation center, and someone struggling with drug addiction should never try to attempt it alone.

Inpatient Detoxification

The Discovery Program offers medically monitored Detoxification services in an inpatient setting for clients needing medical care prior to their transition to Residential or Outpatient Treatment.  Our professional staff provides safe and comfortable care with 24-hour supervision, monitoring, counseling and support.

Medical services are provided by our board-certified Addictionologist M.D. and skilled nursing staff, who have many years of experience in the field of detoxification and the medical management of the withdrawal process.

Detoxification Services include:

·          Semi-private room and all meals.

·          History, physical examination, and lab work upon admission.

·          Evaluation and multi-disciplinary problem-focused treatment planning to address psychological, social, medical, substance abuse, and rehabilitation needs.

·          Discharge and aftercare planning.

·          Daily medical assessments by our board-certified Addictionologist M.D.

·          24-Hour medically monitored care.

·          Patient observation every half hour.

·          Nursing care and assessment.

·          Daily in house recovery groups, panels, and educational lectures for those patients who are medically cleared to attend.

·          Family education with a licensed family therapist for parents, spouses, and other family members.

·          Individual, family, and group therapy with a licensed therapist for those patients who are medically cleared to attend.

·          One-on-one counseling and case management.

·          Access and referral to psychiatric services for dual diagnosis, treatment of bipolar and other disorders.
